FAIR insurance plan rate increase rejected

Massachusetts has rejected a proposed rake hike for home insurance policies under a plan used by consumers who couldn’t get insurance otherwise, and rates will stay in place.

Last November, the Massachusetts Property Insurance Underwriters Association proposed a 6.7 percent increase on the Cape and Islands, and 9.9 percent increases in areas including New Bedford, Worcester, and Springfield, for policies written with the FAIR program for home, condominium and dwelling fire and extended coverage.

Insurance Commissioner Joseph Murphy said Friday the MPIUA failed to demonstrate the filing was justified.

“Whether it’s health insurance, home insurance of any of the lines of insurance we regulate, the Division of Insurance carefully scrutinizes all proposed rate increases as consistent with the laws and regulations of the Commonwealth,” Murphy said in a statement. Read more…

Fort Worth residents say seismic testing damaged their homes

FORT WORTH — It only felt like an earthquake.

Delores Newton was in her Fort Worth home one afternoon in August when trucks involved in seismic testing began their work right outside.

“It scared me,” Newton said. “When I stood up, I was shaking. My ceiling fans were shaking.”

Seismic testing has become routine around neighborhoods in the Barnett Shale natural gas field in recent years. Companies use the data to create a three-dimensional picture of what’s underground to guide drilling.

But Newton and other residents on Lois Street say the testing permanently damaged their homes.

Ohio drivers likely uninformed about wiper, headlight law

Compliance is low on an Ohio law that requires drivers to turn on their headlights whenever they have their windshield wipers on, according to the Columbus Dispatch.

The news source did an independent investigation to support their claim. Standing out on the side of a major intersection during a rain shower, they counted 67 vehicles within five minutes that were not adhering to the rule. According to their estimates, that represented about 25 percent of traffic on the road. Some of the other 75 percent of drivers were only halfway compliant, having their parking lights on, but not their full headlights, the source said.

The law was implemented for safety purposes, according to city officials.
